Chromic Acid for Cleaning Agent

Oxidation Reaction of Chromic Acid

For laboratoriest sometimes use chromic acid to clean their glassware after use to prepare chemical reaction or other purpose. The basic on how this acid can clean glass ware is their oxidizing agent to the dirt which stick to the glass. The process of this chromic acid reaction as follows:

HCrO4-    + 3 Fe++ + 7 H+ --->  Cr+++ + 4 H2O
2 HCrO4-  + 6 I- + 14 H+ --->   2 Cr+++ + 3I2 + 8H2O

Chromic acid will oxidized aldehydes to acids and to oxidize secondary alcohol and ketones. Chromic acid also in acetic acid solution can oxidize benzoic acid, ethylbenzene to acetophenone, triphenylmethane to triphenylcarbinol, fluorene to flourene, and chrysese to chrysoquinone. Chromic acid can dissolve in acetic andydride and sulfuric acid, oxidizes o-xylene to be tetra acetated of o-phtalaldehyde.

Prepare Chromic Acid as Cleaning Agent

The form of chromic acid can be powder and chromic acid is very diluted in water, to make chromic acid for cleaning agent as follows:
  • Chromic acid powder 400 gram
  • Distilled water 4000 ml or 4 liter
  • Sulfuric acid 400 ml
Dissolve chromic acid in water, mixed and stir until all chromic acid dilute in water. Pour the sulfuric acid solution into glass contain of chromic acid slowly. Continuous stir this mixture until all mixture have similar composition with similar color dark brown.

Safety Precaution:

  1. For your heath and safety, please use masker to prepare this solution because chromic acid is toxic if inhale. This fume can irritate our respiratory and reproductive system.
  2. Use google and rubber glove because chromic acid and sulfuric acid can irritate skin and eyes
The source of chromic acid is formed from chromium substance react with water become chromic acid.

Removing Iron Rust Using Electrochemical Process

One way to remove iron rust is by electrochemical process. The iron or metal that will be rusted is given a negative charge and the other electrode means that it is positively charged, so the rust will be released from the metal because negative ions will come out of the metal and go to the positive electrode. If the process is continued, the iron may become shiny, not because it is coated in therapy because the surface is partly faded. This is because the iron functions as a negative electrode, where the ions on the surface of the iron will decay and dissolve into the chemical solution. To give an idea of this process, see the following video:

Viscose Fiber Production Process

Viscose fiber is a base material for textile industry. The first production of this kind product is in Indian than spread over the Europe and United States also in South Asia Country like in Indonesia. Viscose fiber is produced to anticipate the shortage of natural yarn for raw material to produce yarn in textile industries, beside synthetic yarn as replace natural cotton to produce fabric. This one is a simple drawing of viscose fiber production process . Viscose fiber is used to substitute the using of cotton as raw material for textile industry. Beside of cotton availability will not enough to supply market demand in the future, also cotton just available on harvesting season. If people just depend on cotton to produce textile then people will shortage of raw material to produce textile. Using viscose fiber to fulfill of textile industry will not any shortage raw material, beside the price is lower than cotton, viscose fiber also have better quality compare with synthetic fiber fo
